A mob of curious wallabies congregates as I arrive at Hilltop Cabin. They swish their ears and cock their heads in what I hope are gestures of familiarity and friendship, though I’m pretty sure my presence has interrupted their afternoon tea.
While I am a welcome guest at the Mt Kanimbla property on which Hilltop Cabin is perched, this land belongs to the wallabies, kangaroos, echidnas and wombats that toddle, leap and lunch among the lichen-coloured rocks, untamed native grass and tall, shivering trees. Its other permanent residents are a couple of rescue ponies who are partial to a good chin scratch. Lifted from a life of mistreatment, they now spend their days in the salubrious environs of their new sanctuary.
Mt Kanimbla is in the NSW Blue Mountains, a two hour-or-so wind up the Great Western Highway from Sydney. It’s a rewarding drive and there are many worthwhile turn-offs a sightseer can take—Leura, Blackheath and Katoomba are on the way and waiting with all the necessary provisions (cheeseboard accoutrements, wine, lemon meringue tarts).
