Set atop the highest point of the Kanimbla Valley, the Hilltop Cabin at Mt Kanimbla Retreats makes a convincing case for staying put. My partner and I are here on the cusp of winter and spring, when frost-bright mornings loosen into languorous days and blazing golden wattle speckles the scrub. Every corner of the Southwestern-style hideaway is angled to take in the valley: rolling paddocks, towering plateaus and a rippling sandstone curtain that seals us off from the world beyond.
Forty-eight hours later, the car is still parked where we left it. The hiking boots have gone unworn. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.
